Geoff at work! Geoff was born in Bedford , England, in 1926.

King George VI invited him, with many others, to help with the Second World War, as a soldier. Starting in September 1944, he underwent a short training period and then was posted to The Royal Engineers training base at Fulwood Barracks, Ripon, Yorkshire. After more training, he was selected to the Bomb Disposal unit of the Corps.

He was engaged in the disposal of unexploded bombs and the clearing of mines on the beaches around England for over three years from 1944 to 1948 as a Corporal with the Royal Engineers, Bomb Disposal Squadrons 22, 16 and 10. To read Geoff's personal story of that period, Click Here

In 1957 Geoff emigrated to Canada. He settled in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for three years, then moved to Niagara Falls in 1960. Geoff joined the Stamford chapter of the International Kiwanis Club in Niagara Falls in 1966.

I joined the ranks of amateur radio operators on the first of April (April fools day) 1993, having just retired and having been urged to do so by my son, Peter VE3SUN (ex VE3GEJ), since 1965. But it was on a trip to California that I was finally pursuaded. While visiting the Queen Mary at Long Beach, I talked at length to the operator in the radio room. He convinced me that to get my licence and some equipment would be a good idea to keep me interested during my retirement. Upon my return to Niagara Falls I contacted Colin Bailey VE3OCP, he conducts classes in St. Catharines, Ontario, for the Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club starting in September each year. Thanks to his excellent teaching I passed and received my licence. I am a member of the Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club (NPARC), Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC), and American Radio Relay League (ARRL)

Niagara Falls ever freeze over?

I am often being asked whether the Falls ever freeze over, the answer is no of course. This winter was colder longer than most so in late February 2003 I took my camera to the Skylon and took some pictures, Number 028 is taken from the tower it is the "Horseshoe falls" Number 036 is the "American Falls" number 038 taken from ground level and it is the "American falls. If you think they would be of interest to members you could add them to the photo gallery, though they are not ham related.
